THE PATH TO A SUSTAINABILITY REPORT
The project is part of Patagonia’s special activities for the protection of the natural environment, in particular for the future of the Italian mountains. The project aims to create a meeting point for different realities dedicated to the conservation of the mountains in order to facilitate co-operation and the construction of common management models. The aim is to consolidate an association of these entities into a collective that can act together for common goals, without dwelling on what has been achieved so far by individual associations, but building on these existing efforts to create a broader and more co-operative initiative.

CHALLENGES DURING THE PROJECT

Some of the challenges of the project were related to the integration of the different visions and priorities of the various stakeholders. The large number of organisations working to protect the mountains requires coordination that meets the needs and aspirations of each stakeholder. The project certainly enables the building of trust and cooperation between organisations that remain independent but are willing to work together towards a common vision.
The difficulty of coordinating different organisations requires a common action plan and clarity about the responsibilities of individual members. The project has laid the groundwork for a common dialogue and language that will require long-term commitment – a challenge that can certainly be traced back to the organisations’ priorities and resources, which may vary over time.
TWO PROJECT DAYS: PATAGONIA AND THE FUTURE OF THE MOUNTAINS
The first day explored collective perceptions about the mountains, recognising both what is already working and what needs to be improved. The aim was to discuss the main problems and the main issues to be addressed, without focussing on negative aspects, but rather trying to develop a shared vision to move forward together.
On the second day, the understanding of the mountains as an ‘asset beyond the individual’ was broadened and a common commitment to their protection and conservation was called for. A shared vision for the mountains was outlined that goes beyond the idea of individual stewardship and leads to the development of a collective governance model, and priority actions to develop a sustainable future for the mountains were discussed.
Both days promoted a shared vision and collaboration, focussing on the need for collective engagement to protect our precious natural resources.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND INNER GROWTH
The project, led by Terra Institute Italia, involved representatives from Patagonia as process facilitators, through the values of the Inner Development Goals (IDGS) and collaboration with associations that contributed their ideas and expertise.

DAMIANO BERTOLOTTI, COMMUNITY MARKETING & IMPACT MANAGER SOUTHERN EUROPE, ON THE PROJECT
“Connecting and linking people, their stories, their ideas.
Connecting dots and building bridges.
Last February, we did just that at Centrale Fies together with the Terra Institute.
We organised the workshop – What future for our mountains? – to create a meeting point for Italian non-profit associations that care about the mountains and are committed to protecting them.
It was two days that (I hope) can lay the foundations for co-design and the identification of common governance models that strengthen the movement and outline a common vision and path.”
