CHALLENGES DURING THE PROJECT

Before collaborating with the Terra Institute, LCS worked with a service provider that offers a digital tool for creating corporate footprints. With its help, LCS was able to create an initial greenhouse gas footprint for the company in Austria. The LCS sustainability team needed support in validating and correcting the results following the assessment. Input was also required regarding the interpretation of the results of the assessment as well as the development of initial reduction measures and the next steps on the way to the company’s own climate strategy. In addition, the sustainability team needed support in involving other LCS employees in the sustainability process, which, as in many other companies, was a challenge. Corporate sustainability teams often have an enormous head start over their colleagues in terms of knowledge and process understanding in the area of sustainability. This was also the case at LCS.
At LCS, the majority of emissions are in Scope 3, i.e. outside the company’s own boundaries, in the upstream and downstream value chain. These emissions are usually very difficult for companies to record and calculate. On the one hand, because they are outside their own operations and therefore often simply lack data or are difficult to obtain. Secondly, because emissions are generated along the entire value chain, i.e. from the extraction of raw materials, through the use of products to end-of-life, i.e. usually up to disposal. The Scope 3 categories are divided into 15 sub-categories, each with its own calculation approaches. Identifying the hotspots here and achieving reliable accounting results is often a very high hurdle for companies.

FROM THE GREENHOUSE GAS BALANCE TO THE CLIMATE STRATEGY
Since the start of the collaboration, Terra has been able to support the LCS team in interpreting and completing the greenhouse gas balance previously carried out. In addition, initial climate measures were derived for the first sustainability report, which is currently in progress. The Terra Institute was also able to support LCS with an initial screening of Scope 3 emissions and the determination of the main Scope 3 categories. This enabled the company to gain clarity about the hot spots of Scope 3 emissions with the help of Terra. The company can now begin to refine the accounting of these categories in order to develop measures in this area as well. As a result, climate protection at LCS will become stronger in the future.
Furthermore, the visibility and urgency of the topic of climate protection has been increased in other parts of the company. By actively involving other stakeholders who are not primarily active in the LCS sustainability team, the need for a climate strategy for LCS has been communicated to a wider audience. In this way, the sustainability process can be spread across as many shoulders as possible at an early stage and integrated into the various specialist departments as far as possible.
